Some dinnerware admirers attribute the design pattern of the china on the Continental shape to the artist Richard Koppe who designed all the murals and sculpture in the Well Of the Sea restaurant in the Famous Sherman Hotel in Chicago. Indeed, he inspired the fish, bait and lure abstract patterns on the dinnerware, but the lead designer at Shenango China at the time, Paul W. Cook graduated from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1946. Koppe was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and moved to Chicago in 1937 to study at the New Bauhaus which later became the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1950, his work was exhibited at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in the exhibition American Painting Today. He headed the Department of Visual Design at the Institute of Design until 1963. In 2015, 70 of his paintings, prints and drawings were exhibited at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The Well of the Sea was an acclaimed seafood restaurant located in the lower level of the Hotel Sherman in Chicago from 1948 to 1972. It was no ordinary seafood restaurant. While the seafood cuisine was legendary, it was the restaurant ambiance itself that attracted so many admirers. The interior was designed by artists, architects, and interior designers to evoke the experience of dining under the sea. Rather than a literal interpretation, this was accomplished through the use of abstract murals and sculpture of fish, lures, and bait, all lit dramatically. Additionally, the interior of the restaurant was lit with black lights, so menus, murals, and clothing all fluoresced. See Pictures for more information on the inside and menu. The Cups measure 2 3/8″ High x 4″ Wide rim to rim. The Saucers measure 5 1/2 Wide rim to rim. I have provided a lot of pictures to best describe the condition of this Scalloped Cup and Saucer sets. Very Nice Dinner Plate in the Hotel Sherman, Richard Koppe inspired, Paul Cook design’Well Of The Sea’ pattern. It is on a rare and hard to find scalloped Shenango blank. These plates are usually found on the smooth edge Continental plate. These are the first Scalloped versions in the Well Of the Sea Pattern we have ever seen or been able to find. The first SEVEN pictures are of the exact plate you will receive. The final EIGHT pictures are for education and informational purpose and are not included with the plate. The Well Of The Sea pattern is a five color display featuring stylized fish with various hooks and lures on a white ground. The rim is scalloped with an embossed line that follows the scalloping. The base has the Shenango China New Castle Pa mark and code’H15′ that dates this plate to 1957. This one measures 10 3/4 Wide rim to rim. I have provided a lot of pictures to best describe the condition of this Scalloped Dinner Plate. Be sure to scroll down, look left. THERE ARE MORE PICTURES that do not appear in the top gallery.
