10 3/4 diameter service plate from the dining room of The General Oglethorpe Hotel on Wilmington Island near Savannah, Georgia. The hotel name is shown on the top of the plate and the Oglethorpe family crest is shown at the bottom of the rim with the Latin motto “NESCIT CEDERE” He does not know how to give up. The other decorations show a romanticized version of 18th century scenes. The inner and outer edges of the rim are ringed in metallic gold. The maker’s mark on the back is circa 1927 and could be a part of the original china ordered for the luxury resort that opened in 1927 and it is rumored that construction was financed by Al Capone. The hotel was the site for the International Monetary Conference in March of 1946. Two hundred and fifty delegates from forty-five nations in attendance. The golf course was a shooting location for the film THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE.
