This uncommon METS dinner plate is from a friend’s house in Queens, New York. His deceased grandmother was a home nurse for Joan Payson (a Mets owner) before she passed. It was a gift from her and has sat in a china cabinet for about 50 years. The plate was made by Syracuse China and is a heavy, restaurant ware type they were known for. Research from a restaurant ware collectors page revealed it is from 1968 and was used at the high-end Diamond Club Restaurant at Shea Stadium. There is a Mets logo in the center and wide border with slightly ornamental edge. The plate shape is a called Winthrop. ” The plate measures about 10 3/4″ across and is in warm cocoa-taupe, chocolate brown and gilt gold against an off white base. The condition is very good to near mint. It is quite shiny, and the gilt is very good with minor wear on edge. There are a couple of minor factory glaze specks and two minor surface marks that are hard to see see last photo. There are kiln tripod marks on back, of course. There are no chips or cracks. I do not believe it was used as it is very shiny. Please see photos for scale and condition. We can provide more photos/info as needed. This would make a great gift for any Mets collector. This was probably Joan Payson’s personal sample of the plate. People at the fancy restaurant must have been eating off this design when the Mets won The World Series in 1969…
