7 3/4″ Dessert plate center printed with illustration of winged cow reclining in clouds with halo, tophat, and cane, wearing a tuxedo; rim printed with text: “only the best steers may enter / HAMBURG HEAVEN. Has surface scratches from use. He Hamburg Heaven restaurant chain was a New York City touchstone from its inception in 1938 until its sale in 1965, the year after the death of its founder, Phyllis S. Known for its prime beef burgers and decadent desserts, the eatery earned cultural references ranging from Truman Capote’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958) to Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical lyrics. Moffett, who was from Wilton, Connecticut, had recently divorced when she launched the business as a way to support herself and her child. The first location was at 696 Madison Avenue, and there were five by 1959. It became a favorite of celebrities, politicians, and working girls during their lunch breaks. As suggested by the text and imagery on this dessert plate, the company’s playful branding connoted quality meats and transportive experiences in their consumption. Its slogan was The Gates of Heaven Never Close. We do not warrant vintage or used electrical items.
