The Well of the Sea was an acclaimed seafood restaurant located in the lower level of the Hotel Sherman in Chicago from 1948 to 1972. It was no ordinary seafood restaurant. While the seafood cuisine was legendary, it was the restaurant ambiance itself that attracted so many admirers. The interior was designed by artists, architects, and interior designers to evoke the experience of dining under the sea. Rather than a literal interpretation, this was accomplished through the use of abstract murals and sculpture of fish, lures, and bait, all lit dramatically. Additionally, the interior of the restaurant was lit with black lights, so menus, murals, and clothing all fluoresced. See Pictures for more information on the inside and menu. Defunct Scandia Restaurant Hollywood Sunset Blvd Restaurant Decor Deruta Italy Rooster Plates Lot of 4. Condition: The red rooster plate has a small spot where some sauce dripping has hardened; otherwise no other defects. Plates appear to have been used as wall decor in the now defunct Sunset Blvd restaurant. One of the fanciest restaurants in Los Angeles was located at 9040 Sunset Boulevard, just west of Doheny. A man named Ken Hansen originally opened it across the street in 1947. Ten years later, he moved into its more famous location and began serving Scandinavian cuisine to a rich and famous clientele. His sister-in-law, Teddy Hansen, served as the hostess in charge of greeting and seating the beautiful people and she knew everybody. By then, the character of Sunset Boulevard was beginning to change. Other businesses in that area, including the Roxy nightclub and the Rainbow Bar and Grill, attracted a younger, rowdier crowd. Every night, police were busting drug dealers within yards of Scandia, and it did a lot to drive Scandia’s older, wealthy clientele to other, newer eateries. The place finally closed in 1989.
