One of two current listings that feature rare and/or hard to find F W Woolworth artifacts or memorabilia. I was an assistant manager and later store manager of Woolworth stores in the 1960’s and collected Woolworth historical artifacts and advertising memorabilia for decades. My collection was featured in the Woolworth World newsletter back in the day when I worked for the company. Most everyone who fondly remembers shopping at a Woolworth store absolutely loved eating at the lunch counter if the store had one. Not all of the old stores did, but many, many did and I was a customer as a child long before I went to work for them. These two Shenango China grill plates (also called divided or compartment plates) predate by at least a decade or two the restaurant ware that was used when I ate there in the late 40’s to early 50’s. These plates were used at Woolworth luncheonettes beginning in the 1920’s and 1930’s and they are more scarce than “hen’s teeth” if you catch my drift. They are rare and seldom if ever found these days and are highly sought after and treasured by restaurant ware collectors and/or advertising collectors of all types. The plates measure 9 3/8 in diameter and feature white vitrified china background with thin red & green rim stripes and an additional thin green stripe around the compartment portion of the plate. These plates are both free of excessive utensil wear and the glaze is in remarkably good shape with the exception of the one flaw mentioned in the condition description above.
