Very Nice Side Plates in the Hotel Sherman, Richard Koppe inspired, Paul Cook design’Well Of The Sea’ pattern. It is on a rare and hard to find scalloped Shenango blank. These plates are usually found on the smooth edge Continental plate. These are the first Scalloped versions in the Well Of the Sea Pattern we have ever seen or been able to find. The first SEVEN pictures are of the exact plate you will receive. The final EIGHT pictures are for education and informational purpose and are not included with the plate. The Well Of The Sea pattern is a five color display featuring stylized fish with various hooks and lures on a white ground. The rim is embossed scalloped with an embossed line that follows the scalloping. The base has the Shenango China New Castle Pa mark and code’G14′ that dates these to 1956. Some dinnerware admirers attribute the design pattern of the china on the Continental shape to the artist Richard Koppe who designed all the murals and sculpture in the Well Of the Sea restaurant in the Famous Sherman Hotel in Chicago. Indeed, he inspired the fish, bait and lure abstract patterns on the dinnerware, but the lead designer at Shenango China at the time, Paul W. Cook graduated from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1946. Koppe was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and moved to Chicago in 1937 to study at the New Bauhaus which later became the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1950, his work was exhibited at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in the exhibition American Painting Today. He headed the Department of Visual Design at the Institute of Design until 1963. In 2015, 70 of his paintings, prints and drawings were exhibited at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The Well of the Sea was an acclaimed seafood restaurant located in the lower level of the Hotel Sherman in Chicago from 1948 to 1972. It was no ordinary seafood restaurant. While the seafood cuisine was legendary, it was the restaurant ambiance itself that attracted so many admirers. The interior was designed by artists, architects, and interior designers to evoke the experience of dining under the sea. Rather than a literal interpretation, this was accomplished through the use of abstract murals and sculpture of fish, lures, and bait, all lit dramatically. Additionally, the interior of the restaurant was lit with black lights, so menus, murals, and clothing all fluoresced. See Pictures for more information on the inside and menu. These measure 6 1/4 Wide rim to rim. I have provided a lot of pictures to best describe the condition of these. Be sure to scroll down, look left. The Sea Cave was started in 1899 and was located in Oakland California at 441 – 12th Street. The Sea Cave was considered one of the finest seafood restaurants in the Oakland area. The plate is the rarer version with the three (3) fish on the top (with on hanging over the outerboarder pinstripe of the plate) with the wording “Sea Cave” at the top. The restaurant advertised as “We Specialize in all kinds of sea food – Fresh Rainbow Trout and all kinds of shell Fish to Take Home”. Longchamps Restaurant New York 1920s Era Gorham Silver Plate Serving Tray
This beautiful serving tray was made by the renowned Gorham company in the 1920s, and was used in the historic Longchamps Restaurant in New York City. The tray features intricate detailing and is made of high-quality silver plate. Its historical significance as part of the restaurant’s service adds to its charm and collectibility. The tray would make a perfect addition to any collection of vintage hotel and restaurant memorabilia, or as a unique and stylish serving piece for any occasion. 12 X 16 inch 2 Pounds 10 ounces. Honest wear from use and age in this famous NY Restaurant. Great piece of New York Restaurant History. Plate missing in some small points. Several pictures taken at different angles to show condition. Longchamps was a chain of several upscale restaurants centered in Manhattan that consisted of twenty or more locations at its peak, including the Showboat Restaurant located in the Empire State Building. The chain’s first location was opened in 1919. Longchamps restaurants were known for their natty art deco furnishings and decorations by Winold Reiss, and a number of designs for elements of their physical surroundings were drawn up by New York architect Ely Jacques Kahn, originator of a colorful version of art deco architecture. In the early 1960s, Longchamps was the first – and perhaps the only – restaurant to introduce complementary Metrecal at luncheon, [citation needed] and was otherwise known for such specialties as Oxtail Ragout, Crabmeat a la Dewey, Nesselrode Pie, and “21-Percent Butterfat Ice Cream”.
